750 billion US dollars are lost each year due to machine failures caused by insufficient lubrication and more than 22.2 million tonnes of lubricants seep into water and soil every year. Despite this, 240 billion US dollars are spent on lubrication annually. igus shows how a clean revolution can be achieved with pioneering technologies such as AI and VR as well as innovative materials. This year, the polymer specialist is presenting 247 innovations from all areas of lubrication-free motion plastics that benefit both the environment and industry. New products made from ECO materials and renewable resources, new linear and drive technology for the smallest installation spaces through to heavy-duty applications, the extension of the igus guarantee, AI-based robotic solutions and the igus:bike, which is now going into serial production under the new brand name RCYL.

Mobile “socket” from igus makes supplying container ships with shore power safe, fast and flexible

With the igus Mobile Shore Power Outlet (iMSPO), igus has developed a mobile connection system for shore power supply that can be positioned at any location along the terminal where a ship is berthed. This solution, which is already in use at the Port of Hamburg, received the “Ports and Harbor Innovation of the Year” award at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 in Amsterdam.

The plastic bicycle from igus goes into series production with the new name RCYL

RCYL starts a new chapter in sustainable mobility. The former igus:bike is now called RCYL – a bicycle made from 50 per cent recycled fishing nets. For the moving components, igus relies on its lubrication-free, rust-free and recyclable high-performance plastics – “zero lubrication”. With series production in Cologne, igus is setting a milestone: the plastics company aims to produce 5,000 bicycles by next season. This, however, is just the beginning. The aim is to establish local production at landfill sites around the world and thus close the plastic cycle.

1.136 billion in turnover, 6.7 per cent more customers and 247 new products at the Hannover Messe

After two years of rapid growth totalling 57 per cent, igus was able to maintain its billion-euro turnover in 2023 despite the challenging global economic situation. In 2024, the company will invest in 247 new motion plastics products and digital services. More favourable and better solutions for lubrication-free movements, low-cost automation and CO2-reducing products are the focal points. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has now made it possible to bundle hundreds of thousands of test data and millions of applications from 60 years of igus experience into a simple solution finder for the “Zero Lubrication” goal: the igusGO app. 433 million euros of investment in the last three years, around half of it in Germany alone, is accelerating this technical progress and delivery from stock worldwide. This trend is set to continue in 2024.
